The University of Toronto Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

Introduction

The University of Toronto Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program is a comprehensive training opportunity in Sport and Exercise Medicine for the postgraduate resident or practicing physician in Family Medicine.  This program will prepare the fellow to incorporate best practices in musculoskeletal medicine in clinical, educational and research settings. Sport Medicine is a diversified and essential set of unique skills dealing with the musculoskeletal system, nutrition, general medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, geriatrics, exercise medicine, health promotion and prevention issues, sports bracing, podiatry, event coverage, and athletic emergencies.

The skills of sport and exercise medicine are in demand in the medical community due to the increasing medical importance of exercise through the lifecycle combined with waiting list for orthopedic and rheumatologic patient services. Sport and Exercise medicine training provide relevant management strategies to deal with current concerns in childhood and adult obesity, the growing epidemic of arthritis and non-surgical management of common overuse syndromes.

 

Curriculum Overview 

 Objectives:

  1. To provide basic knowledge of musculoskeletal and sport medicine as it relates to primary care.
  2. To help the candidate to understand the role of exercise in health promotion.
  3. To teach the management of both acute and chronic injuries/illnesses and to identify prevention issues.
  4. To teach the candidate what knowledge and skills are necessary to perform as a team physician.
  5. To develop the role of the family physician with special skills in Sport and Exercise medicine.
  6. To prepare the fellow for eligibility to challenge the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine diploma examination.
  7. To allow the Sport Medicine fellow to have the opportunity to continue their family medicine skill development with one day in an academic teaching practice with an individualized practice.
 

 

Week at a Glance:

 

1)      1.5 Days per week in a consistent sport medicine clinic setting.

2)      .5 days per week in an exercise medicine setting

3)      2 days per week in rotation and elective placements

4)      1 day per week in Family Medicine, Research or Specialty Skill     area.

Criteria For Application

  1. Must be a member and in good standing with the C.M.P.A. (Section 64).
  2. Must be a member and in good standing with the C.P.S.O. or equivalent.
  3. The candidate must hold a general license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario.
  4. The candidate requires 3 letters of reference (preferably 1 sports medicine reference).
  5. Must send in a Certificate of Conduct from the C.P.S.O.
  6. Must send in updated Curriculum Vitae.
  7. Must send a letter of introduction outlining the fellow's goals for the year (approximately 250 words).
  8. It is recommended that the candidate become a member of the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine.

Evaluation:

The director of the Sport Medicine fellowship program will be the coordinating program supervisor for the fellow. The current director is Dr. Julia Alleyne, jkalleyne@crucible.net or 416-323-6478.

Clinical supervisors will contribute to evaluation submissions on a quarterly basis and this will be reviewed with the fellow. The fellowship committee will review the candidate’s final evaluations for promotional status.

Faculty's Evaluation

The fellow is expected to complete an evaluation of his/her key supervisors twice yearly. This is a mandatory requirement to be completed with the fellowship director for the purpose of improving any subsequent rotations. The fellow will be protected from any situations of direct conflict.

Funding

The U of T Sports Medicine Fellowship is a combined funding of service and grant monies which usually total between $30,000-$40,000 per year. This funding base is dependent on hospital and university availability of grants and billing opportunities. The fellows program is designed with academic goals and not funding targets.  There is an opportunity to apply for additional funds to reimburse course registrations.

 

Vacation Time

The clinical year is 52 weeks long with four weeks of combined vacation and conference time. This is negotiable based on funding agreement.  Religious/Statutory holidays will be considered separate from the four weeks designated as vacation time. The four weeks vacation time is not to be taken in bulk.

Agreement

The Fellow will be expected to sign a letter of agreement with The University of Toronto Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program for confirmation of funding, academic obligation and professional conduct.
